Relay for Life

What is Relay for Life?

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life is an annual event, free and open to the public celebrating the efforts of local teams fundraising money to impact cancer related services, research, and treatments.

Relay For Life is more than a walk – it’s a chance to come together in your local community to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against every cancer as we come together for every life.

Be a part of the global community of passionate supporters working to help end cancer as we know it, for everyone. – from www.acsevents.org

Members of the Relay for Life of the North Country prepare to embark on the first lap of the event. Throughout the night, many laps are themed or represent different groups like a survivors lap, care takers lap, and more.

The luminaria ceremony consists of lighting candles inside of white bags that have been decorated and designed in honor or remembrance of loved ones who battled different forms of cancer. These luminaries line the inside of the walking track to greet people as they continue their laps.

Samaritan Medical Center and the Walker Center for Cancer Care at Samaritan have continually supported Relay for Life of the North Country and fundraise a great deal of help for local American Cancer Society resources. Their space at Relay resides adjacent to the Survivors Hospitality Tent.
