By: TOBY NEWCOMBE – EVANS MILLS, NY – It was a night of extremes at Evans Mills Raceway Park as the New York SuperStocks rolled into town to join the other classes at the racetrack on S & R Automotive and Caskinette Ford night. A long line formed at the pit window right at the 4 pm opening and fans continuously rolled into the grandstand for yet another “largest crowd of the season” night. Unfortunately rain would play a factor and make it the longest show of the year.
60 race cars were in the pit area, easily a season high. After a stirring opening where an oversized US flag was carried around track by active and retired military service members to aid in raising money for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, the Sport Compacts and Serv Pro Thunderstocks ran their heat races. Shortly after the start of the first heat race for the Fidelis Care INEX legends, the rain started to fall. Track management didn’t waver and assured everyone they were going to wait out the rain and race for all the fans and teams who traveled from a distance. The rain and track drying caused a delay of over two hours which thinned the crowd somewhat, but those who stayed saw some great racing.
The first feature of night was for Sport Compacts and Serv Pro Thunderstocks and consisted of 13 cars, a season high. Craig Caskinette reeled in his second win with Chuck Powelcyzk second in the #17 and Amanda Dafoe third in the #61. Josh Verne Jr. in the #1V won the Serv Pro Thunderstock portion. Justin Pope had a good race as a late arrival at the track put him in the back, but he moved forward all the way to second in the #100.
The Caskinette Ford modifieds were next in a race that featured 15 cars, another season high with several drivers making their first appearance at Evans Mills, including Taylor Caprara in the #126, Casey Sykes in the #1, Geoff Sharkey in the #66, Levi Arthur in the #25, and Jacob Matzel in the #18. Larry Welling Jr. in just his second race in the pavement modified #48 held off Mason Spencer in the #30 for the victory. Welling is a former Evans Mills track champion on the dirt (2005) and has channeled his success to the macadam.
The 50 lap NY SuperStock race was a barnburner with a local driver coming out on top for the second year in a row in the 23 car field. Driver skill played a big role as the long race wore down tires on a slick track, and the cars became tough to handle as the laps wound down. Dylan Bancroft in the #91 and Andy Cryan in the #09 traded the lead a couple times with Bancroft hanging on for the win. It was a spirited celebration in victory lane between father Ray Bancroft and son Dylan. Zach Willis in the #75 completed the podium with a third place run. Points leader Nick Robinson in the #15 finished fourth after leading much of the race.
The finale of the night was the 20 lap Fidelis Care INEX Legend feature. It was run after midnight and there were several cautions and accidents, the worst of which occurred on the frontstretch when the #13 of Brad Salatino spun and collected the #92.5 of Frank Sibley Jr. who almost went over on his roof. It was the first night at the track for both drivers. 9 cars started the feature but only 4 finished. Josh Marchese in the #31 picked up his first feature win of the year. Track management thanked the fans for their patience as the show finished at 12:42 am with many fans staying till the very end.
The next race night is Saturday July 20 with the first annual Nicole Berry-Garnsey Memorial Ovarian Cancer Awareness night sponsored by the Carthage Area Hospital and Caskinette Ford. Wear teal to the track to show your support!
